Samsung Electronics Co. projected a sharp increase in first-quarter operating profit on strong sales of smartphones, a trend analysts expect to continue as the South Korean company begins selling its Galaxy S 4, the WSJ’s Min-Jeong Lee reports.
The company said Friday it expects an operating profit of between 8.5 trillion won (US$7.6 billion) and 8.9 trillion won for the three months ended March 31. That compares with a 5.7 trillion won operating profit a year earlier.
Samsung didn’t break down the operating profit figure by business units or provide an estimate of its first-quarter net profit. Investors will pay close attention to the telecom unit’s performance when the results are issued later this month, to check for signs of profit saturation.
